Our Approach

GSS is dedicated to developing and executing best-in-class programs by attracting and fostering interdisciplinary talent with access to Argonne’s unmatched scientific facilities and capabilities.

Operating as a vibrant, interdisciplinary research community, GSS researchers find solutions to mitigate, respond to, and recover from a wide spectrum of national and global security threats. We believe an interdisciplinary, all-threat approach enhances our ability to deliver insightful, rigorous solutions to address global security risks and issues.

We recognize that global security threats evolve and emerge on a moment-to-moment basis, we anticipate evolving threats and help our partners prepare and respond effectively.

GSS Research Centers

Global Security Sciences is home to four Centers that directly align with our core strengths in Strategic Security, Risk and Infrastructure Science, Global Energy Science, and Systems Science. We draw upon expertise from a range of GSS and Argonne National Laboratory experts.

Center for Strategic Security (CSS)

CSS develops and implements practical technical solutions to address threats to global security, including weapons of mass destruction (WMD)-related terrorism, insider threats, foreign acquisition of U.S. weapons and technology, compromised critical materials, and supply-chain vulnerabilities, among others.

Risk and Infrastructure Science Center (RISC)

RISC experts deliver scientific tools and methodologies to inform risk and resilience decisions, focusing on design of resilient cyber and physical infrastructure; threat analysis for the intelligence community; advanced cyber security solutions; and support for emergency managers in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from disasters.

Strategic Alliance for Global Energy Solutions

Energy is not independent of its wider environmental context; rather, energy is a key component of economic development and economic preservation. The Argonne SAGES team is a trusted partner providing technical support to regulators, policy makers, strategic decision makers, and energy engineering teams.

Systems Science Center

SSC is committed to advancing systems science by developing integrated computational and analytical solutions that increase our understanding of physical, social, economic, and technological interrelationships; forecast future scenarios; and support decision making in complex environments.
